PADI Assistant Instructor Course

Overview

The PADI Assistant Instructor course is the first portion of the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC). The IDC provides instructor candidates with additional training that allows them to implement the PADI system of diver education and also helps them to gain a complete understanding of PADI’s educational goals and philosophies.The course includes knowledge development through self-study, quizzes, lectures and presentations; confined water skill review and assessment, workshops and presentations; as well as open water workshops, rescue assessment and candidate presentations.

Certification

A certified PADI Assistant Instructor is allowed to:
- Teach academic presentations under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor
- Evaluate Open Water Diver surface skills under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor
- Teach the PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty course
- Teach Project AWARE Specialty courses
- Teach Emergency First Response (EFR) after successful completion of an Emergency First Response Instructor course
- Conduct PADI Discover Scuba experiences.

Performance Requirements

To be certified, an instructor candidate must:

1. Complete all 16 independent study IDC Knowledge Reviews.

2. Attend the seven IDC Curriculum Components including:
i. Course Orientation
ii. Learning, Instruction and the PADI System
iii. PADI Discover Scuba and Snorkeling Programs
iv. Developing Knowledge Development Presentations
v. Teaching Project AWARE and Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialties
vi . Teaching in Confined Water
vii . Conducting Open Water Training Presentations.

3. Successfully present at least 2 evaluated Knowledge Development Teaching Presentations.

4. Successfully present at least 2 evaluated Confined Water Teaching Presentations.

5. Successfully present at least 1 integrated (2 skills) evaluated Open Water Teaching Presentation.

6. Successfully demonstrate with competence at performing all 20 dive skills listed on the Skill Evaluation.

7. Successfully complete the Assistant Instructor Standards Exam.

Duration

3 days or more, depending on candidate’s ability and performance.

Prerequisites

To enroll in an IDC or AI course, an individual must:

1. Be certified as a PADI Divemaster or hold a leadership level certification with another recreational diver training organizaiton.

2. Be at least 18 years old.

3. Be fit for diving and submit a Medical Statement for a diving medical examination conducted within the past 12 months.

4. Have been a certified diver for at least 6 months and have completed and logged at least 60 open water scuba dives and have documentation of experience in deep, night and navigation diving.

5. Submit proof of CPR and first aid training within the last 24 months.

6. Submit documentation of any equivalent certification issued by another recreational diver training organization.

7. If not a PADI Divemaster, successfully complete the PADI Divemaster course diver rescue skills assessment.
